National nonprofit lands story in New York City

Through my work with Watermark Retirement Communities, I’ve had the opportunity to work on my fair share of heartwarming stories. So, when Watermark for Kids, the nonprofit associated with the senior living provider, reached out and asked for help on a story in Brooklyn, NY, I was happy to help.

Watermark for Kids helps kids aged 6-22 overcome barriers and access life-enhancing opportunities. For this story, our Watermark Kid was James DePauw, a 10-year-old boy with autism who was traveling to New York to complete two-week intensive therapy program sponsored by Watermark for Kids.

I met with leadership from Watermark for Kids and James DePauw’s mother and drafted a release that shared his story. Given that New York City was a new media market for me, I also dove headfirst into media research and found several strong opportunities for this story.

New12 Brooklyn sent a reporter to meet the DePauw family as they visited the The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights, a nearby Watermark Retirement Community. The resulting story shared more about James and his diagnosis as well as Watermark for Kids.

The Brooklyn Paper also interviewed the DePauw family and leadership from The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights and published a story following the DePauw’s return to Texas.

As a direct result of this news coverage, Watermark for Kids had a grandfather reach out seeking help for his grandson. The organization is eager to make a difference in another child’s life.
